FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS

  • What is seed paper?
Seed paper is plantable paper that has been embedded with seeds during the paper-making process. This means that the recipient can plant the paper and grow wildflower, herbs, or vegetables! Talk about reduce, reuse, recycle! Visit notesofeden.com/plant for more detailed planting instructions.
  • How does your seed paper work?
Our premium, 100% recycled seed paper is embedded with tiny seeds which, when planted, will grow into wildflowers or herbs! The type of seeds embedded in the paper is indicated by the information on the backs of the cards and usually by the types of plants depicted on the cover. Visit notesofeden.com/plant for more detailed planting instructions!
  • Is the paper texture really bumpy? Is it hard to write on?
Yes and no. The texture of the paper definitely varies depending on the particular sheet, the kinds of seeds embedded in the paper, etc. The texture can be very uneven at times. However, I write on them all the time and have little to no trouble. As an artist and calligrapher, I am very particular about paper and penmanship, but I love writing on these cards! I also spend about 30 seconds carefully examining each piece of paper that I print, and I do my best to align it in the printer such a way that the writing surface is the smoothest and most writable surface of the pape
  • What kind of ink do you use to print your cards? Is it non-toxic?
The cards are printed using non-toxic ink on a professional-grade Epson Eco-tank printer. It is safe to grow edible plants (such as herbs or veggies) with this paper.
  • What is the paper made out of?
Our seed paper is made of 100% post-consumer, post-industrial, recycled paper embedded with seeds.
  • Did you make the paper yourself?
Great question! No, I buy the paper from a fabulous 100% solar-powered facility in Denver. However, I design, paint, scan, print, cut, fold, package, and deliver each card by hand in my little Minneapolis home studio!
  • What about the envelopes? Are they plantable?
The envelopes are not plantable, but they are also made from 100% recycled, FSC certified paper produced in a zero-emission, hydropowered facility.
  • What kind of pen do you use on this paper?
You can use any kind of pen! However, for best results I recommend using a fine-tip sharpie or some kind of ballpoint pen that writes smoothly and doesn’t require so much pressure, as the paper may be a little softer than typical paper.
  • Are the seeds non-invasive?
The seeds in the seed paper are considered non-invasive in all regions of the US and Canada. They include a hearty and diverse mix of annual and perennial wildflowers that will grow well across all growing regions, and most are drought-tolerant! In addition most of these seeds—including the herbs—grow flowers that are pollinator powerhouses!
  • Are the seeds Non-GMO?
    Yes! All seeds are non-GMO!
  • What is the shelf-life for the seed cards?
Seed paper can grow even if 5 or 6 years old, but typically the germination rates start to decline after 3 or 4 years. This will also depend on how the paper is stored – keeping it in a cool, dry place will preserve the germination rates much longer than if the paper is kept in a hot, humid one.
  • What kind of seeds are in the paper?
Each card is embedded with seeds from one of the following varieties: (indicated by the plants painted on the front of the card or the information on the back). WILDFLOWER MIX: Corn Poppy, English Daisy, Black- Eyed Susan, Sweet Alyssum, Spurred Snapdragon, and Catchfly WELLNESS MIX: Lavender, Basil, Chives, Peppermint, Chamomile, and Sage. HERB MIX: Parsley, Basil, and Chives
